You started your business to do something besides obsessing about content. Yet, it’s either taking up WAY too much time or it’s overwhelming and isn’t getting done at all.
Sound familiar? This is something I struggle with too. Once I’m done with everyone else’s words, it’s hard to turn that switch on for my own business.
HOWEVER, we do need to do it. In today’s landscape, having a content strategy makes the difference between your customers seeing you and buying from you and *crickets*.
It doesn’t need to be a chore though and there’s ways that I’ve made it a lot easier. Here are my three totally doable tips to trim down the time it takes to write up your content.
1. Batch Your Content
Your content is like your meal planning. Yeah you can whip something together but when you take the time to make a plan, it’s always way better.
So, put it in your calendar and do a bunch at once. Bare minimum, do a week at a time. I promise, when you set aside the time, your brain will get in that mode and it’ll be easier than trying to throw something together here and there.
2. Have a Purpose
Ever sit down to write something and that horrible little flashing line just reminds you how stuck you are?
Me too. Isn’t it the worst?!
Part of the problem is that we’re sitting down to write SOMETHING. That’s broad and big and overwhelming.
Ask yourself these three questions:
- What is my goal in posting?
- Am I trying to educate, entertain or sell?
- Why does my audience care?
I find by the time I ask those three questions, I have more of an idea of what I want to say.
3. Relax
I know, never in the history of the world has anyone relaxed because someone said to relax.
However, let’s gain some perspective on the things that we write. While what we do is important, the words we write are not instructions for open heart surgery.
It’s okay to make mistakes. It’s okay if it’s not perfect. (Want proof? Go visit the blog of Seth Godin, Marketing Genius! That guy has grammar mistakes for days!)
You cannot edit a blank page. So get some words out and you can take it from there.
BONUS TIP: Ask for Help
Sometimes the big thing that helps is talking it out. Find your business besties and have a chat.
OR if you’re really stuck, or the stuff you’re creating isn’t resonating, book a call with your favourite Word Nerd (aka me!). I’d love to help you out.
I’m also working on a mini-workshop all focused on planning your content for 2022 so stay tuned for details on that. To get on the list to hear more about it – fill out the form below!
