This is one you’re going to want to keep and share – I’m busting out all of my favourite tools that help me when I’m writing.
Tools to Help You Plan
Semrush’s Persona Generator
If you’ve heard me talk before, you know I’m all about thinking about your audience and building that dream client persona.
Well, Semrush makes it pretty darn easy and even puts a face to it!
Asana
I can’t be the only person that gets a good blog idea while walking the dog, in the shower, etc.
Asana is great for keeping my team organized, but I also use it for my own to-do list and a place to house my future blog topics.
It’s free, there’s an app on my phone, what’s not to love?
My Dollarama Calendar
Okay folks, in a year with a lot of business wins, this one makes my top 5.
$2 at my local dollarama and I have 24 pages of blank calendars to fill in a rough content plan. What’s not to love!?
Tools to Get Inspired
Not sure what to write about? This is going to help:
Answer the Public
This site is amazing for getting inspired. Basically, you type in your search phrase and it will tell you all the different questions people are googling about it.
For example, “writing a blog” comes up with 53 questions. The best part? It’s free! (Well, it’s free for 3 searches per day, so plan accordingly).
Hubspot’s Blog Idea Generator
I love any sort of generator – I did one yesterday about what colour my kid’s hair colour would be even though he was sitting in front of me!
While I don’t necessarily use the titles Hubspot gives me, it does get the juices flowing. Put in five nouns and they will spit out a flurry of ideas.
Tools for Better Writing
Grammarly
Want to make sure that you’ve crossed your t’s and dotted your i’s? Grammarly has got you. Plus it has a web extension that will connect right to your browser so you can see your mistakes in real-time.
The paid version also has a plagiarism check, so you can make sure you’re not accidentally writing the same thing as someone else!
Mel’s List of Power Words
Yes, I’m plugging my own thing, but with good reason. We sometimes use the same adjectives to describe things – see how many times I use the word amazing – and so let’s mix it up and add some pop to our writing!
Tools to Help Your SEO
Yoast
If you have a WordPress site, you can use this super tool to ensure your pages and posts are SEO-friendly.
No WordPress? No problem! Yoast has an online content checker that will also do the trick.
Just plug in your keyword and it’ll make sure you’re doing all those nitty-gritty SEO things.
Google Analytics
While this isn’t going to help you with SEO per se, it is nice to know how people are getting to your site.
Unfortunately, Google Analytics doesn’t show what organic search terms get people to your site. For that, you need to link it to a tool like…
Keyword Hero
It lets you see what people are searching for that leads them to your site.
Sites for Free, Royalty-Free Pictures
Need some pictures for your site/blogs/social media? Don’t want to worry about all that pesky copyright stuff?
Here are my top 3:
