I think the 2020’s are going to be marked as an era of (amongst other things) misinformation.
Fake news became a catch phrase. People are losing their money because of TikTok financial advice. I recently spoke to someone who’s industry now has to do things differently because of myths that everyone has believed. So basically, something BECAME true because myth-builders willed it into existence.
All of this to say is that we are literally drowning in information and misinformation. And I’ve been hearing that a lot from you.
So, while I cannot give you financial advice or most other types of advice, I can dispel some myths that I am just sick and tired of hearing.
You should [insert thing]
First of all, anything that starts with “you should” automatically gets my back up. Unless it’s, “Mel, you should have a nap today.”
I’ve had people telling me, “This person told me I should be telling stories and not anything educational.” Or, “I heard I should have long Instagram captions”. Or “I should be doing trendy reels.”
The reason I don’t like “should” statements is because they quickly turn advice from being a suggestion to an inflexible statement of fact. Sales, marketing, business…none of it is an exact science.
Instead of a THIS or THAT mentality, why not have a this AND that mentality? Have some short captions and then some long ones. Post about something educational and also share your story.
While you should post strategically, don’t feel like there content marketing needs to be a stiff and rigid thing. If you don’t dance on video, I promise, the social media police will not come and get you!
(That having been said, you should have some kind of structure or plan)
You Need To Be a Posting Machine
This is really another “should” statement…that you should be posting a weekly blog, daily social media posts on 75 different platforms (along with engagement), as well as your email newsletters, etc. etc. etc.
If you have time for all that, have at it!
However, if you’re an entrepreneur, you are everything from the CEO to the person who goes and grabs coffee, plus everything else you have going on in your life. You do NOT have time for that. I do NOT have time for that.
Remember: Consistency and frequency ARE NOT THE SAME THINGS.
It is so much better to create something less frequently but have it be high quality and something you can sustain.
That Content Marketing Is Too Complicated For You
Is content marketing easy? No! There are a lot of moving pieces and a lot of things to consider.
However, you can do it. Don’t get intimidated by “content strategy” being kind of a fancy phrase.
Like everything in life, you can learn how to write better, more strategically, and can add that skill to your business toolbelt.
